Save on Office Phone Costs with VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a service that lets users communicate over long distances using the internet. Unlike regular phones that still convert electrical signals into sound, VoIP is more practical and cost-effective. Users can send voice messages, images, and even video to each other without call charges or billing. Voice quality is also better than with regular landline phones.

VoIP is now widely used for many purposes, including business. Companies are increasingly leaving landlines behind and switching to VoIP technology, because it is not only cheaper but also more practical and rarely has problems. VoIP brings many advantages for business owners: besides being affordable, it lets users enjoy both local and international calls.

To use VoIP, you need a VoIP service, which you can get from an ISP (Indonesian) or a VoIP service provider, much like the internet service you get from an ISP or the phone service you get from a PSTN line. NEX Network is the solution for your VoIP network. Contact us via the WhatsApp button below with any questions about service rates and installation.

What Is VoIP?

Technically, VoIP, also called IP telephony, internet telephony, or digital phone, is a technology that lets users communicate over long distances through packet-switched networks such as intranets or the internet. Instead of regular analog phone circuits, VoIP uses network protocols such as H.323, MGCP, SIP, SDP, RTP, or IAX. Voice data travels across the network and is converted into digital code.

VoIP uses very little CPU (only 0.80 to 1.35% per call). Bandwidth usage is also very small, between 86 and 86.8 kbps for incoming calls and 83.4 to 84.3 kbps for outgoing calls. Communication between VoIP peripherals has also been tested to work well, with delay, jitter, and packet loss all in the good range.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one of the fastest-growing network applications: borderless, low-cost, real-time communication. Because VoIP services are growing so quickly and use the internet to carry data, VoIP servers are an easy target for hackers and viruses. If a server is infected, the company suffers, because others can steal and record data (conversations) between clients.

Don’t worry: with a NEX Network VoIP plan, you get an additional firewall (Fireguard) that closes thousands of open ports and grants only a few ports and access rights to clients. A firewall is essential, because without one, network intruders may be able to destroy, damage, or gain access to files on your computers. Firewalls come as hardware or software, such as Shorewall.

Why VoIP Makes Business Easier

Communication is crucial for companies; it is the spearhead of a company’s success, from communicating with clients to close deals to communicating with colleagues and managers at the office. Office communication can use regular phones, but the costs are high. The solution is to use internet-based technology for communication between users: Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

With an open-source operating system and an open-source firewall, Shorewall, installation and testing showed the firewall to be quite reliable at handling external attacks. VoIP service quality testing found that VoIP uses very little CPU, only 0.80 to 1.35 percent per call. Communication between VoIP peripherals also performed well, with delay, jitter, and packet loss all in the good range.

As we all know, regular phones are often very expensive, making a company’s operating expenses hard to predict. Given this, a technology that can replace phones at low cost is essential, which is why VoIP was chosen as the alternative solution.

VoIP vs. PSTN Comparison

The differences between conventional phones (PSTN) and internet phones (VoIP), from technology and quality to cost.

AspectPSTNVoIP
SwitchingCircuit switching. Bandwidth is reserved even when no information is being exchanged.Packet switching. No bandwidth reservation; network resources aren’t used when packets aren’t being transmitted.
ProtocolUses the SS7 signaling protocolUses SIP, H.323, RTP, and several transmission protocols to send data.
ServiceTraditional services such as phone calls, voicemail, fax, caller ID, and more.Provides almost all traditional services plus video, data, and multimedia services.
QualityQuality guaranteed by a 64 kbps bandwidth reservation. No bandwidth reservation, so heavy traffic can affect quality, but with enough bandwidth it can exceed PSTN quality.
InfrastructureRequires separate infrastructureData and voice share the same infrastructure
Power supplyPhone lines carry 48V power even during power outagesNo independent power supply; backup power is usually arranged.
AccessLimitedOpen architecture with almost no limitations
EmergencyCallers can be located during emergencies because each client has a subscriber lineNo built-in emergency mechanism
SecuritySecured by defaultNo guarantee due to its open nature (a firewall is needed)
CostHigh due to additional infrastructure and managementRelatively low because the existing data network carries voice
